Spend Smart: How Smart Technology and AI Are Closing the Inventory Visibility Gap in Specialty Stores

Specialty retail has always been a precision business. A boutique apparel chain running three colorways across twelve sizes, a regional hardware retailer managing thousands of SKUs across dozens of stores, a farm and pet supply operator navigating seasonal peaks and unpredictable vendor timelines, these businesses live and die by one question. Do we have the right product, in the right place, at the right moment?

In a cooperative study with Chain Store Age magazine, IHL Group studied 96 specialty retail brands across apparel, mixed goods, cosmetics, and hard goods segments, and the data reveals a widening divide. Retailers who built the right technology foundation before the AI era arrived are now accelerating. Retailers running fragmented, legacy systems are falling further behind at a rate that is no longer gradual.

The AI opportunity is real and measurable. Companies who prioritized integrating Al into their existing applications project 80% higher profit growth heading into 2026 compared to the average retailer in this study. Technology early adopters expect 85% higher profit growth and grow store-level IT investment 87% faster than average. These numbers confirm what winning retailers already know. The payoff is there, but only for those who sequenced their investment correctly.
